Enamelling – half-day taster workshop

Join me at The Studio for a practical, hands-on introduction to enamelling. Enamelling is the process of bonding glass to metal using heat. You will learn how to apply finely ground coloured glass powder onto copper shapes before firing them in a specialist kiln at high temperatures.

During this taster workshop, you will see the glass melt and fuse to the copper, creating a smooth, vibrant, and permanent finish. This session covers the basics of the craft, showing you how to prepare your metal and apply colour to create your own finished pieces of jewellery or decorative items.

What to expect

This workshop is a relaxed introduction to adding colour to metal. After a short demonstration, you will move on to the practical steps:

  • Preparation: You will start by cleaning your copper shapes so the glass bonds properly.
  • Applying colour: You will use a range of lead-free powders, learning how to sift even layers and create simple designs.
  • Firing: You will watch your pieces through the kiln spyhole as the powder melts into a glossy surface in just a few minutes.
  • Finishing: Once your work has cooled, you will learn how to clean up the edges for a professional finish.

What’s included

The workshop fee is all-inclusive, so you don't need to worry about any hidden costs. I provide all the professional tools and materials required to complete your projects.

·        Materials: All the copper shapes (blanks) and lead-free enamel powders you will use during the session.

·        Tools and equipment: Full use of the studio kiln, sieves, firing stilts, and metal-cleaning tools.

·        Safety equipment: I provide aprons, masks and safety glasses for your use throughout the workshop, but please bring your own if you’d prefer to use them.

·        Consumables: Abrasives, cleaning agents, and finishing materials for polishing your work.

·        Jewellery findings: A selection of basic findings (such as jump rings or cord) to turn your enamel pieces into wearable jewellery.

·        Tuition: Step-by-step guidance in a small group setting to ensure you get plenty of individual support.

·        Refreshments: Drinks and homemade cake are always here!

What to bring

I recommend you bring the following:

·        A notebook and pen: To jot down firing times, colour combinations, and design ideas.

·        A packed lunch: (For full-day workshops only). There are also local cafes nearby if you prefer to pop out for a break.

·        Your own safety equipment: I have aprons and masks available, but feel free to bring your own if you’d prefer.

What you will take home

By the end of the workshop, you will have a collection of finished work that you have designed and fired yourself. Everything you make is yours to keep. Your pieces will be cool enough to handle and take home safely within minutes of leaving the kiln.

However, the workshop is about more than just the physical items; you will also leave the studio with:

·        Your finished pieces: A selection of copper pendants, earrings, or charms featuring the colours and designs you created.

·        New skills and knowledge: A solid understanding of the enamelling process, from metal preparation to kiln safety, giving you the confidence to explore the craft further.

·        A creative refresh: Enamelling requires focus and precision, making it a naturally mindful activity. Many people find the process of sifting powder and watching it melt in the kiln to be incredibly relaxing and rewarding.

·        A shared experience: Workshops at The Studio are small and social. It is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people in a friendly, supportive environment.
