Silver spinner ring workshop

Join me at The Studio for a fun project – a silver spinner ring. In this full-day session, you will learn how to make a wide sterling silver base ring and one or more smaller ‘spinner’ rings that sit and move freely around it.

This workshop is a fantastic way to practise the fundamentals of silversmithing. You will work with sterling silver sheet and wire, learning how to manipulate the metal so the outer rings spin smoothly—making it a lovely tactile ‘fidget’ ring to wear.

What to Expect

This session is a rewarding mix of precision and creativity. I will guide you through the technical steps needed to ensure your ring is both stylish and comfortable:

  • Sizing and sawing: You will learn how to calculate the correct length of silver for a wide band and use a piercing saw to cut your metal to size.
  • Soldering and shaping: You will use a specialist torch to join your silver and then use a steel mandrel and mallet to form your rings into perfect circles.
  • Creating the ‘spinner’ effect: You will learn the clever technique of flaring the edges of the wide band, which captures the smaller rings so they can spin without falling off.
  • Decorative finishes: You can choose to leave your rings smooth and polished, or add textures and patterns using hammers or the rolling mill.

What’s Included

The workshop fee is all-inclusive, providing all the professional materials and guidance you need.

  • Materials: All the sterling silver sheet and wire required to create your wide base ring and your chosen spinner rings.
  • Tools and equipment: Full use of The Studio’s tools, including jewellery saws, torches, mandrels, and polishing equipment.
  • Safety equipment: I provide aprons and safety glasses for all participants.
  • Consumables: Specialist silver solder, fluxes, and various grades of abrasive papers and polish for a smooth finish.
  • Tuition: Clear, step-by-step demonstrations and individual support in a small group setting.
  • Refreshments: A steady supply of drinks and homemade cake.

What to Bring

To help you stay safe and comfortable, please bring:

  • A notebook and pen: To record your ring sizes and the steps of the process for future reference.
  • A packed lunch: (For full-day workshops only). There are also local cafes nearby if you prefer to pop out for a break.
  • Hair tie: Long hair must be tied back when we are using the torches.
  • Appropriate footwear: Please wear closed-toe shoes for safety.

What you will take home

  • Your finished spinner ring: A bespoke sterling silver ring that fits you perfectly, designed and polished by you.
  • A range of silversmithing skills: Including soldering, texturing and forging.
  • The joy of making: There is something incredibly satisfying about the precision required to make moving parts work together in jewellery.
  • A calming experience: Many people find the repetitive motion of a spinner ring very soothing; making one yourself adds an extra layer of mindfulness to the craft.
