Silver spinner ring workshop
Join me at The Studio for a fun project – a silver spinner ring. In this full-day session, you will learn how to make a wide sterling silver base ring and one or more smaller ‘spinner’ rings that sit and move freely around it.
This workshop is a fantastic way to practise the fundamentals of silversmithing. You will work with sterling silver sheet and wire, learning how to manipulate the metal so the outer rings spin smoothly—making it a lovely tactile ‘fidget’ ring to wear.
What to Expect
This session is a rewarding mix of precision and creativity. I will guide you through the technical steps needed to ensure your ring is both stylish and comfortable:
- Sizing and sawing: You will learn how to calculate the correct length of silver for a wide band and use a piercing saw to cut your metal to size.
- Soldering and shaping: You will use a specialist torch to join your silver and then use a steel mandrel and mallet to form your rings into perfect circles.
- Creating the ‘spinner’ effect: You will learn the clever technique of flaring the edges of the wide band, which captures the smaller rings so they can spin without falling off.
- Decorative finishes: You can choose to leave your rings smooth and polished, or add textures and patterns using hammers or the rolling mill.
